Maytenus senegalensis


Common name is Red Spike thorn, synonym Gymnosporia senegalensis, in Marathi Henkal.

It is a very thorny tree up to 2 meters high, branching in all directions. The leaves are alternate, oval or diamond shaped, oblong, whole or toothed. Flowers originate from the axillary bud, which is the intersection of leaf and stem. The fruit are large capsules, globe shaped, pinkish-reddish in colour.

This tree is seen at various places in Matheran, especially where the forest meets the cliff. Seen on the path to Garbit point, to Panorama point and at Black water spring.
